On Tuesday, September 9th, Michael Lambert, our high school American History teacher and grandfather of SJBA students Gabe and Sofia Rueda, shared his experience of a personal encounter with Our Blessed Mother during his service in the Vietnam War. During the heaviest fighting of the Vietnam war, Lt. Michael Lambert, a former Marist Seminarian, unknowingly saved the lives of 35 Vietnamese Catholic parishioners because of Our Lady's intervention. Mr. Lambert encouraged the SJBA community to depend on Mary's maternal love for us in our daily lives and to entrust our needs into her hands.

Thank you, Mr. Lambert for your service and for sharing your inspirational and moving story with us. Our Lady of Perpetual Help, pray for us!

During lunchtime that same day, the SJBA students enjoyed a beautiful cupcake rosary provided by the Jones Family and the Rueda family.  Thank you Amy Jones and Sarah Rueda for making our Blessed Mother's Birthday such a memorable experience for our students at SJBA!

Fall Candle Tutorial

by Meg Boyle, 7th Grade

A couple of weeks ago, my 7th grade History class had a Passover meal. Our History teacher, Mr. Michael Pham, lead us in this event. Everyone had to bring in a dish that was kosher. At the beginning of class we prepared the food, then we each got our meal and ate. All the food was delicious! Especially the cake. Then, when everyone was in their seat and eating, we turned off the lights and watched part of The Prince of Egypt. It's one of my favorites...Moses being found and taken into Egyptian royalty, leading the people to the Promised Land...it's just all awesome! After we had watched some of the movie, we cleaned up and class was dismissed. From the food to the movie, it was just like a TV dinner!

What a busy month we have had while learning about community helpers! We were fortunate to have Deputy Kevin from the Forsyth County Police Department visit our classroom to teach us all about Stranger Danger.  Our
students were engaged and asked a lot of questions.  Deputy Kevin did a fantastic job with this age group!

We also had a terrific visit from the Forsyth Country Fire Department.  We had the opportunity to learn about fire safety, watch the fire fighters put on their gear, and took a tour of the fire truck!  What a lot of fun!
Our students were excited, inquisitive, and learned a lot!

Taking to heart the suggestion to dig deep for a "second collection" and inspired by her teacher Diane Houlihan who challenged her students to find a way to raise money for the building fund, 5th grade SJBA student Maddie Cohen raised $220 with a fall candle fundraiser. Maddie wrote the letter shown below, sent it to friends and neighbors, and then made the decorative candles herself. SJBA is proud of Maddie's enterprising spirit and grateful for her generous donation of time and money. Thank you, Maddie!

Blessed Mother's Birthday

On Saturday, September 13, 2014, SJBA families volunteered at the Miracle League Special Needs Baseball league at Coal Mountain Park in Cumming. Students and parents volunteered to partner with a speacial needs child for protection and fun during the games while some of our younger students cheered on the teams. Participating families were:

Willis, Cohen, Catania, Wilborn, Smith, Boyle, Craggan, Phillips, Fisher, Brenner, Wright, Madda, Nelson, Spillane, and Swygman.

Thank you to everyone who came out to help!

I am very excited to be a part of the SJBA community. As the oldest of five children I feel I have been a teacher all of my life! I even taught my parents how to speak English because I was 4 years old when we left Cuba to come to the United States. I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, but after high school decided I wanted 4 seasons and received my BA degree from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA.

I met my husband during my senior year, and after getting married, we moved to Toronto, Canada. I lived and worked in Toronto for 10 years as a Human Resource Trainer for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. My twins, Carmen and Peter, were born there. After one too many snow storms we moved to Atlanta where our youngest child Alyssa was born. I became a preschool teacher at St. Benedict where we are still parishioners. I was recruited by American Retail Group to be a Human Resource Recruiter and Trainer and stayed there until the twins started St. Pius X Catholic High School. I realized very quickly I had to travel less and applied as a Spanish teacher when a position became available. I held many different positions in the 15 years I was at St. Pius including teacher, Admissions Director, Curriculum Developer, trainer for the teachers, Registrar, AP Coordinator, and integrating technology in the classroom.

I realized while at St. Pius how much I loved to learn, so I received my Masters in Education in 2012. Personal experience and my years at St. Pius reinforced the value of Catholic Education in the world we live in. I hope my experience as a parent and administrator will help SJBA students form strong foundations to make good choices and decisions as they enter young adulthood.

Dear Mrs. M____,

My school, St John Bosco Academy, has outgrown our current rented space.  Thankfully, a great building has come available across the street and we are well on our way to raising the money to purchase it.  However, we need more help!

This is my fifth year at SJBA and I love the teachers and my friends there.  The best part is the Catholic faith is at the heart of all we do!

To help raise my share to support SJBA's building project, I am making fall candles shown in the attached photo.  They are spice scented and will look beautiful in your home this autumn!

The cost of each candle is $10.  Will you please help support our cause by purchasing one (or more!)?  Just reply to this email with your order.  I can take cash or check made out to "SJBA".  I will bring the candles to your house at a time convenient to you. Thank you so much!!

Blessings,

Maddie Cohen
